On May 1, 2024, Stamford Photography Club held its annual Photograph of the Year competition as the culmination of our 2023-2024 season. Members were asked to submit 3 images across the 3 categories: Black & White Print, Color Print and Digital Image with no more than 2 images into any single category, for a chance to be crowned our 2023-2024 Photograph of the Year. The images members submitted into this competition were shown throughout this competition season and could be from the open subject or assigned subject categories. Our judges were tasked with selecting one image per category to represent the Stamford Photography Club as the Photograph of the Year, not an easy task for sure with many great images to select from.

Below are the Images of the Year, along with a story behind the image from the makers.

Black & White Print of the Year

Bouncing by Sally Harris

My husband Mike and I have been photographing this Amish family for about 7 years. The most recent visit was on a Sunday in 2019. They were so excited to show us their brand new trampoline, that they didn’t even have time to change out of their church clothes. It was only after I looked back at all the images (taken with iPhone) that I found this one – with the three boys mid-air and the horse in the background with his leg up, like he was having fun too. ~Sally Harris

Color Print of the Year

Bliss by Rosemarie Consunji

I took this photo through the glass window of a hotel room in Cartagena, Colombia. The room had a view of the beach, the Caribbean Sea and a set of swimming pools about ten floors below. I was deliberating about going for a swim so I looked out the window to check if the pools were not too crowded. This is what I saw. I grabbed my iPhone 15 and took some shots. I processed this image in PhotoShop and Topaz Studio. ~Rosemarie Consunji

Digital Image of the Year

Drenched by AJ Clay

I am incredibly honored and humbled for my image to be chosen for SPC’s Image of the Year.

On the last day of a mostly rainy trip to San Francisco last summer, I made the short hike (and a few near slips on some wet rocks) down to Marshalls Beach to hopefully get a few shots of the Golden Gate. ‘Drenched’ is how I left the beach when heading home that morning, soaked from standing in waves taking pictures.

I went into the trip hoping to get a Golden Hour sunset shot of the bridge. While the weather had other plans, I’m thankful the skies cleared for just long enough to capture this moment. ~AJ Clay
